In recent years, modern bathroom designs has made a huge departure from the way bathroom spaces have been designed and built in the past.
The modern bathroom design is a personalized private refuge, as beautiful as it is functional. Dimmed lighting and scented candles encourage a relaxed mood. Shower and baths are sculptured spaces, akin to indoor fountains of hygiene and health. Bathrooms are a perfect stress‐buster. Bubbles swirl in the tub, water pulses and steam forth from fixtures with the power to soothe aches of body and soul. Today's contemporary bathrooms can be an oasis of efficient yet luxurious indulgence, a relaxing temporary retreat from a hectic world.
Some modern bathroom designs even have areas set aside for aerobic exercise, stretching, meditation or yoga. Some have a small refrigerator and a space for making coffee or blending fruit smoothies for breakfast. Media has also moved into the bathroom. You can watch television while in the bathtub on a screen which retracts when you are done. There are mirrors which never fog, music piped into the shower stall, and you can access the Internet while dressing.
The cramped, dark bathrooms of decades past have become retreats in which to indulge the senses. The transformation has been dramatic. This change from a merely utilitarian cleansing space to a luxury environment has been partly influenced by modern hotel and spa resort bathroom design. Bathrooms are hot right now in the home improvement business, eclipsing demand for new and remodeled kitchens. The bathroom is now regarded as one of the major focal points in architectural and design schemes.
Bathrooms are also being made far more accessible to everyone who uses them, from the working professional couples to infants, toddlers, and children, elderly and handicapped persons. Several barrier—free design adaptations make usage easier for both the able–bodied and those with special needs.
